Mungo Park

Mungo Park was a Scottish surgeon and explorer. He became commonly known as the first westerner to travel to the central part of the Niger river.

Mungo Park was born on September 11th, 1771, near Selkirk in Scotland. At just 17 years old, Park abandoned his family to pursue his education and attended the University of Edinburgh. Park's studies included botany, medicine, and natural history. He excelled in these subjects and graduated with a medical diploma in 1792. Having finished his studies, Park set off for London, and through his brother-in-law, he was lucky enough to be introduced to Sir Joseph banks. Banks was a famous English botanist and explorer who had circumnavigated the world with Captain James Cook. And just like that, Parks became hooked on becoming an explorer.
