Donald McBeath



People travelling to, or through, Blair Atholl might wonder who the imposing bearded highlander is who proudly stares out of the threshold signs to the village. The man is Blair Atholl’s most famous son, Donald McBeath. He was born in 1830, a native Gaelic speaker. He lived his early life in the family cottage at Ruidhe na Coileach, or “shieling of the grouse”, in Glen Girnaig by Beinn a’Ghlo. He worked on the land in his early life both as a cattle herdsman and as a ploughman.
